Supporting the People Behind Safeguarding
Safeguarding leadership • Reflective practice • Supervision
Meet Kamelia
I'm Kamelia Johnson, an experienced safeguarding leader, Independent Safeguarding Consultant and Supervisor with more than 20 years' experience working with children and young people across education and youth-facing settings.
My career has included strategic and operational safeguarding leadership, mental health and wellbeing, attendance, multi-agency working, policy development, training and supporting safeguarding professionals with some of the most complex aspects of their roles.
It was through this work that I became increasingly interested in who supports the safeguarding lead.
DSLs are expected to make difficult decisions, hold significant responsibility and remain professionally curious, often while managing the emotional impact of safeguarding work themselves. Yet opportunities for meaningful reflection can be limited.
That experience led me to develop safeguarding supervision as a central part of my consultancy. Today, I provide reflective supervision to DSLs and safeguarding leads, alongside specialist training and consultancy designed to strengthen safeguarding leadership and practice.
My MA in Education Leadership further developed this area of interest, with my dissertation exploring the impact of safeguarding supervision on DSL practice and wellbeing. I am also a member of the Community of Practice for Safeguarding Supervision in Education (COPSiEE), a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (CMgr FCMI), and a conference speaker on safeguarding supervision and leadership.
I bring together practical safeguarding experience, reflective practice and leadership development, with an approach that is warm, thoughtful and appropriately challenging.
My Mission
Safeguarding is demanding work. Those who lead it are required to hold risk, uncertainty, complex decision-making and, often, the emotional weight of concerns involving children and families.
My mission is to strengthen safeguarding by supporting the people responsible for leading it.
Through safeguarding supervision, specialist training and consultancy, I create opportunities for DSLs, safeguarding teams and leaders to reflect, think critically and approach complex situations with greater clarity and confidence.
I believe reflective practice should be part of strong safeguarding practice, not something reserved for when things become difficult. When safeguarding professionals have protected space to think, question, reflect and be appropriately challenged, it can strengthen professional judgement, resilience and ultimately the quality of safeguarding practice.
My work therefore brings together safeguarding leadership, reflective practice and professional wellbeing, helping individuals and organisations develop safeguarding practice that is thoughtful, confident and sustainable.
My Approach
Warm. Reflective. Grounded in practice.
I create space for safeguarding professionals to think openly, explore uncertainty and be appropriately challenged without losing sight of the child, the risk or their professional responsibilities.
My approach combines support with professional curiosity because effective supervision should help practitioners feel supported and strengthen the quality of their thinking and decision-making.
