“Supervision supervision creates space to reflect, strengthens professional judgement and supports the people who carry safeguarding responsibility”.

What is Safeguarding Supervision?

Safeguarding supervision is a protected, reflective space for the people who carry safeguarding responsibility.

It gives DSLs and safeguarding leads time to step away from the pace and demands of the role, think more deeply about their practice and explore the complexities that do not always have straightforward answers.

Supervision moves beyond case updates and operational problem-solving. It creates space to consider how and why decisions are being made, question assumptions, explore different perspectives and strengthen professional curiosity and judgement.

It also recognises the emotional impact of safeguarding work. Within a confidential and supportive relationship, practitioners can reflect on what they are carrying, recognise how their own responses may be influencing practice and consider the professional boundaries needed to sustain them in their role.

Good supervision provides both support and professional challenge.

The aim is not to tell safeguarding professionals what to do, but to help them think well, remain curious and move from reflection towards purposeful action.

Why it matters

Effective safeguarding supervision can help practitioners to:

  • Strengthen professional judgement when navigating complex, uncertain or high-risk situations

  • Develop reflective practice, creating space to question assumptions, consider alternative perspectives and remain professionally curious

  • Recognise the emotional impact of safeguarding work and process experiences that might otherwise be carried alone

  • Maintain professional boundaries and role clarity, particularly when responsibility and expectations become blurred

  • Identify drift, uncertainty and stuck thinking within complex or long-running situations

  • Build confidence in professional challenge and escalation when concerns remain unresolved

  • Support sustainable safeguarding practice, recognising that DSL wellbeing is an important part of effective safeguarding leadership

Ultimately, supporting the professionals who safeguard children helps strengthen safeguarding practice for the children and young people they serve.

My Approach to Supervision

Supervision Framework

My supervision practice is developing around the SAFE Supervision Framework, a structured yet flexible approach designed to support deeper reflection, strengthen professional judgement and help practitioners translate insight into action.

SUPPORT

Creating the conditions for honest reflection

A psychologically safe and confidential space to pause, acknowledge the emotional demands of safeguarding work and explore what may be difficult to say elsewhere.

ANALYSE

Looking beneath the presenting issue

Exploring evidence, assumptions, risk, uncertainty and different perspectives to strengthen professional curiosity, critical thinking and decision-making.

FRAME

Understanding role, responsibility and boundaries

Stepping back to consider what belongs to the practitioner, what belongs elsewhere and how professional identity, organisational context and boundaries may be influencing the situation.

ELEVATE

Turning reflection into purposeful action

Identifying learning, strengthening confidence and translating reflection into clear next steps that support professional growth and sustainable safeguarding practice.

Every safeguarding professional brings a different context, experience and set of pressures into supervision.

My approach is therefore structured, reflective and responsive. I create a confidential space that balances psychological safety with professional challenge, enabling practitioners to explore not only what is happening, but also how they are thinking, responding and making decisions.

The SAFE Supervision Framework

Supervision Sessions

1:1 safeguarding supervision is available online and is typically scheduled once each half term, providing regular protected space for reflection throughout the academic year.

Sessions are shaped around the supervisee rather than following a rigid agenda. Depending on what is most useful, we may explore a complex safeguarding situation, professional judgement, decision-making, boundaries, organisational pressures, leadership challenges or the emotional impact of the work.

My role is not simply to provide answers.

It is to create the conditions in which you can pause, think, question, make sense of complexity and determine what needs to happen next.

The aim is for you to leave supervision with greater clarity, strengthened professional judgement and a clearer understanding of both the situation you are managing and yourself within it.
