Safeguarding & Child Protection: Recognise, Respond, Report and Record
Building safeguarding awareness, confidence and effective practice.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, but recognising concerns and knowing how to act is essential to keeping children and young people safe.
This practical and engaging training session introduces the Four Rs of Safeguarding: Recognise, Respond, Report and Record, providing participants with a clear and memorable framework for responding confidently and appropriately when safeguarding concerns arise.
Moving beyond simply understanding policies and procedures, the session explores how professional curiosity, effective communication, timely reporting and accurate recording contribute to a positive and proactive safeguarding culture.
Through realistic scenarios, discussion and practical activities, participants will strengthen their understanding of their individual safeguarding responsibilities and the importance of taking appropriate action when something does not feel right.
What Will the Session Cover?
Recognise: Identifying Safeguarding Concerns
Explore the signs and indicators of abuse, neglect and wider safeguarding concerns. Participants will consider changes in behaviour, presentation and circumstances, alongside the importance of professional curiosity and recognising concerns even when a child has not made a direct disclosure.
Respond: Taking Appropriate Action
Understand how to respond calmly, sensitively and appropriately when a child or young person shares a concern. This includes active listening, avoiding leading questions, providing reassurance and recognising what to do when concerns arise through observation or information shared by others.
Report: Sharing Concerns and Taking Responsibility
Understand when, how and to whom safeguarding concerns should be reported. Participants will explore the importance of timely information-sharing, following organisational procedures, understanding professional responsibilities and knowing when further challenge or escalation may be necessary.
Record: Creating Clear and Accurate Safeguarding Records
Develop an understanding of effective safeguarding recording, including distinguishing between fact, observation, professional judgement and assumption. Participants will consider the importance of capturing the child's voice and how individual concerns can contribute to a wider understanding of risk.
Practical Learning and Reflection
Throughout the session, participants will engage with realistic safeguarding scenarios and apply the Four Rs to four essential questions:
What have I noticed?
How should I respond?
Who needs to know?
What needs to be recorded?
These activities encourage participants to translate safeguarding knowledge into confident, proportionate and effective practice.
